As Israel’s offensive reduced whole neighbourhoods to rubble, the records that anchor Palestinians’ claims to homes and land have often vanished with them. Deeds, contracts, bills and permits are lost in the expanse of Gaza’s ruins.
Many of the 1.9mn displaced out of more than 2mn residents left their paperwork behind as they fled. Others never had formal documentation in the first place. And Israeli forces have razed entire neighbourhoods to the ground so they are unrecognisable even to the people who lived there.
Retrieving the missing evidence has become increasingly vital. Israeli forces occupy more than half of the land in Gaza — an expanding zone of control — while at the same time plans are being discussed for militarised enclosures, multinational security bases and even luxury real estate, explains the FT's Malaika Kanaaneh Tapper.
