Brett McGurk, former deputy assistant for national security affairs for the Middle East and North Africa and author of Brink: Inside the Race to Free the October 7th Hostages, says there can be no “political horizon or future” as long as Hamas maintains its claim to power in Gaza, while Israel’s narrow right-wing coalition leaves the government with little room to maneuver. McGurk also recounts the difficult hostage negotiations, rejects claims that Hamas was prepared to quickly release the captives after the attack and discusses the regional diplomacy underway with Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian Authority before October 7. He speaks with Kailey Leinz and Joe Mathieu on Bloomberg’s "Balance of Power."
