A retired British couple who were on a yacht which had warning shots fired near it by a Russian warship in the English Channel said the experience was "surreal".
Russia’s defence ministry said the yacht was on a “dangerous course” and that several attempts were made to contact it.
This came hours after the UK government imposed further sanctions on Russian businesses and on ships accused of illegally transporting Russian oil and gas.
It also followed the announcement that the UK defence minister had resigned over the UK government's lack of spending on defence and security.
We speak to the BBC's diplomatic correspondent, Paul Adams, about the incident and the alleged security risks posed to the UK by Russia.
