New York City’s next mayor, Zohran Mamdani, promises to make the city more affordable by freezing rents and raising taxes to pay for his programs. But business leaders warn that higher taxes could backfire. We speak with Partnership for New York’s Kathryn Wylde, BXP CEO Owen Thomas, and developer Brian Steinwurtzel on the balance between growth and affordability, the challenge of delivering on the housing units the city needs, and what the new administration must do to attract talent and investment while making the city more livable.
