That was when National Semiconductor completed the $550 million sale of its legendary Fairchild Semiconductor division. Now, the sale to Fairchild was remarkably unceremonious, a middling end for one of Silicon Valley's founding companies, a company that spawned dozens of the best known tech ventures that exist today.
