Violent unrest broke out in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as protesters demanded justice after the killing of a prominent student leader. Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who was shot over the weekend, had become an outspoken critic of the authoritarian rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose government collapsed in August 2024 after a monthslong standoff with a youth-led movement.
The offices of two leading newspapers were set on fire, and arsonists targeted the homes of several politicians in different cities.
