Why has a Brazilian Supreme Court judge sent ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to jail for 27 years? Prosecutors have said a scheme to overturn the ultra-conservative’s election defeat included plans to kill the winning candidate, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his vice-president Geraldo Alckmin and the judge, Alexandre de Moraes. While the plan failed, the court found it culminated in riots on January 8 2023, when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters trashed government buildings in Brasília and called for a military putsch.
